The Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, better known in our community as the Fond du Lac Cathedral, is a local fellowship within Christ's One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, a congregation of the Episcopal Church, the Mother Church of the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac, and, most importantly, a family of diverse individuals gathered to worship a loving, liberating, and life-giving God and to serve our neighbors within our community and around the world.
As members of the worldwide Anglican Communion, our roots are traced back to the Church that Jesus founded and which, soon after the Resurrection, would make its way to the British Isles. Today, Anglican Christianity represents the third largest Christian body in the world and has faithful members on every continent. Anglicanism is often described as the Church of the via media, "the middle way." That is to say, we endeavor to "bridge the gap" between evangelical protestantism and traditional catholicism. To quote Bishop John Jewel (1522-72), Anglicans believe in "one canon of Scripture reduced to writing by God himself, two testaments, three creeds, four ecumenical councils, five centuries [of Christian tradition laid down by] the series of Church Fathers in that period." What is more, Anglican Christianity is, in the best senses, both traditional and progressive, mirroring our Lord's description of the "owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom treasures old and new" (Matthew 13:52). Additionally, Saint Paul's is committed to being "a Cathedral for the whole community." Whether we are distributing food to the hungry, hosting free lectures and concerts, sponsoring educational opportunities for adults and children, or, simply, opening our doors for private prayer and meditation, we are trying to live into our vocation to be your Cathedral, a center of worship and service for all of Fond du Lac. |
